Overview.

The Yucatan Peninsula is recognized as a very important area with an enormous diverse bird population due to its strategic location for migratory birds.  Too there is a rich resident population.

To date, 543 species have been viewed in the Yucatan Peninsula, representing nearly 50% of all the bird species registered in the country.

You will travel the most outstanding areas of natural beauty with an expert  local-bird & wildlife guide and a small number of fellow travelers. This tour distills the best of the Yucatán into a trip that takes in the peninsula’s dry forest, coastal scrub, lagoons, mangroves, and tall humid forest. This is a great tour for beginners and a wonderful scenic tour for the experienced birder.

 a)  Jungle Bird watching

The Yucatan Peninsula is among the richest and most diverse habitats on earth. We’ll depart early to visit the rich forests near town, where species include Ocellated Turkey, Yucatan Poorwill, Yucatan Flycatcher, Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Wren, Black Catbird, Red-vented Woodpecker, Yellow-lored Parrot, Orange Oriole, Rose-throated Tanager, Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Turquoise-browed Motmot, Masked Tityra, Social Flycatcher, Altamira Oriole, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Pied-billed Grebe,  Yellow-throated Euphonia, White-eyed Vireo, Olive-throated parakeet, American Redstart, Painted Bunting, and Common and Black Vulture to mention a few that we can observe in our jungle birding trip.

We will also have the opportunity to walk in very isolated Maya communities where we will be surrounded all by nature, it’s beautiful landscapes and wildlife.

b)  Coastal and Wetland Bird watching

We’ll take a kayak trip through all the coastal and wetlands, walking on the beach by the sunrise and kayaking in the mangrove mazes and lagoons of Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve spotting birds as Reddish Egret, Boat-billed Heron, Green Heron, Bare-Throated Tiger Heron, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Great Blue Heron and its white morph, Wood Stork, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Kingfisher, Black, Savanna and Turkey Vulture, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, Magnificent Frigate bird, Brown Pelican, Anhinga, Double-crested Cormorant, Mangrove Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird, Royal Tern, and Brown Pelican among others.

* Observation of migratory birds is optimal from December to February.

GROUP SIZE

Around 8 explorers. A very important feature of our Sian Ka´an eco tours is the limited group size, as off the beaten path nature expeditions are best experienced with smaller groups of travelers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Birding Adventure can be tailored to your particular interest and needs. Our itinerary includes short- to medium-length walks over uneven terrain, over wet, slippery surfaces and steep inclines, and with some altitude gain. We stress that all activities are optional.

*As our adventures are performed in the natural wild places the Physical Requirements can be also influenced by the weather conditions.

WHAT TO BRING

Sunglasses, hat, wear light comfy clothes (pants and long sleeve shirt), swimsuit, towel, comfortable shoes, have an extra set of clothes for the end of the day, biodegradable eco friendly sunscreen and mosquito repellent, water bottle, binoculars (optional), and camera (optional).
